Both Maryland and New Hampshire recently lifted their gas taxes in order to pay for improvements, while in Pennsylvania private groups have stepped up to fund bridge upgrades within the state. However, a vast majority of states haven’t acted. This could be because they’re waiting to see what Congress does, or perhaps it could be because midterm elections are just months away and no elected officials want to be responsible for pushing through much-needed tax hikes in their state. Either way, if neither side does something soon, certain states could be facing a transportation budget shortfall that could translate into a lot of lost jobs.

The lawsuit filed Thursday in Polk County District Court accuses the La’James chain of cosmetology schools of fraudulent practices. A lawyer representing the beauty school chain said his client denies any wrongdoing. LaJames operates cosmetology and massage schools and salons in Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Johnston, Fort Dodge and Iowa City, and has one location each in Illinois and Nebraska. What many students experience is a school with extraordinary turnover of instructors resulting in instructorless classrooms and inconsistent instruction, lack of access to practice their skills and, ultimately, an institution that treats them more like free labor than students, the lawsuit states. Indeed, through their tuition students seemingly pay La James for the privilege of working for the company, according to the suit. The attorney general’s office also argues the beauty school chain unfairly charges students who fail to graduate by an arbitrary deadline. Depending on which program they select, students pay at least $4,750 and up to $18,660 in tuition. The suit alleges prospective students arent told they will have to perform janitorial, laundry and other duties and will have to sell products for the company or they will be penalized. Students are only given credit for training done on paying students, not on mannequins or other students, the suit states. Students are given a deadline to complete training, and they have to pay fees for additional training done after the deadline, the suit states.

They just launched in the U.K. and will hit U.S. shelves in late August. Nails Inc. founder Thea Green was inspired by a couple of trips to New York City last year. On one trip we saw a group of very lovely girls walking down the street all drinking their green juices, and no one in London was drinking green juice then, she said in a recent interview. Then I heard a woman in a restaurant, a very proper upper east side New Yorker, reject her salad because it was rocket (arugula) and not kale. I thought the whole thing was fascinating, Green said.
