Tanning oil and sunscreen below an SPF of 15 don’t block enough of the sun’s harmful UV rays to protect your skin and will allow the sun to cause damage. The popular Banana Boatsunscreen with SPF4only blocks about 75percent of UVB rays while SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of the rays. Protecting yourself from the sun’s UV rays will benefit not only your health, but your appearance as well. In fact, many of the wrinkles, skin thinning and overall “leathery” look of skin that are often associated with old age are actually due to extended periods of time under the sun without protection. Even more importantly, protecting your skin from the sun can help prevent skin cancer. Tanning Beds: While tanning beds may seem like a quick, easy fix for pale skin, their consequences may not be worth the tan. According to Livestrong.com, women who use tanning beds more than once a month are over 50 percent more likely to get melanoma . Melanoma is the most dangerous and deadly form of skin cancer. In the past, tanning beds were often advertised as a safe way to tan, but cancer research has discovered a strong link between tanning beds and melanoma, especially for young users. The younger you are when you start using tanning beds, the higher your lifetime exposure to dangerous UV rays becomes.

But the truth is, the long-term impact of personal-care creations arent always fully understood until years after they go to market. Thats the case with several high-profile health and beauty products on the market today: Doctors and scientists are discovering that despite their popularity and healthy image, they may not be so good for us, or for the planet. So we asked Lisa Donofrio, M.D., associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University, for her take on the recent headlines. Heres her advice on which ingredients to avoid, plus her recommended alternatives. Antibacterial soaps and body washes Liquid hand and body soaps that boast antibacterial claims often contain an ingredient called triclosan, which has been linked to antibiotic resistance and hormone disruption . (Triclosan is also present in some toothpastes and cosmetics.) It gets into the water supply and kills off beneficial bacteria, says Dr. Donofrio. Plus, she adds, research hasnt shown a true health benefit to antibacterial products. We need to be a little dirty; its good to give our immune systems something to do so they dont turn on us. The FDA has warned manufacturers that in the coming years, theyll need to prove that products containing triclosan are more effective in preventing illness and reducing the spread of infection than regular soap and water, or theyll have to reformulate their products. And Minnesota recently issued a ban on triclosan , which will go into effect in 2017.

Eric Engman/News-Miner ULTA Beauty supply store coming to Fairbanks Construction continues on the new ULTA Beauty supply store next to Sports Authority in the Johansen Business District Tuesday afternoon, June 24, 2014. Beauty products superstore planned in Fairbanks By Jeff Richardson jrichardson@newsminer.com newsminer.com FAIRBANKS A Chicago-based beauty retailer is planning to open a superstore in the Johansen business district next year, becoming the latest national company to enter the Fairbanks market. ULTA Beauty expects to open an 11,000-square-foot store in 2015, joining about 700 other ULTA stores throughout the country. Construction of the building is already underway at a site next to Sports Authority in the rapidly growing commercial area. Carolyn Sutphen, an event planner for ULTA Beauty, declined in an email to discuss specific details about the store, including an opening date, stating that they would be released at a later date. But she confirmed a lease has been signed for the store, which will include more than 500 different brands of products plus full salon services. Stephen Anderson, plans examiner for the city of Fairbanks, said ULTA has only pursued a shell permit to build a basis structure at the Johansen-area site. He expects the company to resubmit more specific plan details at a later date, which is a fairly common practice for a large commercial building. ULTA Beauty offers mass products for price-conscious shoppers, Sutphen stated in her email, including items in the categories of skincare, cosmetics, fragrances, hair care, nails, and bath and body. The company describes itself as the largest beauty retailed that provides one-stop shopping for prestige, mass and salon products and salon services in the United States. It operates 696 retail stores in 46 states.

Beauty products superstore planned in Fairbanks – Fairbanks Daily News-Miner: Local News

Gone are the days when we would wear a smokey eye just for brunch or blast our cheeks with contouring powder, bronzer, and blush now, having the confidence to go outside makeup-free is all the rage. Youre freshly-washed, youre low-maintenance, and best of all, youre effortlessly beautiful. at least thats what we want you to think. Alas, our bare faces rarely look as good in real life as they do in pictures, as fluorescent lighting has a way of illuminating our imperfections the way Instagram cant. And as much as we want to say embrace your flaws, showing up to the office with full-on dark circles may mislead your boss into thinking youre sick or hungover. The solution? No makeup makeup, where we use an array of beauty products to create the illusion of a poreless, dewy complexion devoid of spots, scars, and dry patches. In other words, you put on just enough makeup to cover your problem areas, but not so much that people can tell youre wearing it. Want to rock the bare-faced look without actually going bare-faced?
